Hitachi C251 Convex Ultrasound Transducer Repair: Crystal Replacement Restores Complete Imaging

Ultrasound transducers are the heart of any diagnostic ultrasound system. When image quality degrades, the entire examination suffers — and for hospitals, clinics and imaging centers, a faulty probe means delayed diagnoses and lost scanning time. In this repair case study, we walk through how a Hitachi C251 convex ultrasound transducer that was producing missing and incomplete images was fully restored after a crystal (element) replacement.

1. The Reported Fault: Missing and Incomplete Images

The customer, an imaging service provider operating a HITACHI ARIETTA 65 system, reported that the C251 convex probe was displaying incomplete images with missing areas. Instead of a full, uniform field of view, the scan showed blank and dark drop-out zones, which made abdominal and OB/Gyn examinations unreliable and clinically unusable.

Figure 1: Before repair — the diagnostic scan shows missing and incomplete image areas (drop-out zones) caused by a failed crystal array in the C251 probe.

2. Diagnosis: Crystal Array Failure

Upon inspection and bench testing, our engineers confirmed that the root cause was a failure within the piezoelectric crystal array. When one or more crystal elements stop transmitting and receiving acoustic signals correctly, the system cannot reconstruct a complete image — resulting in exactly the partial, incomplete picture the customer described. Because the housing and lens were otherwise in good condition, a targeted repair was the most cost-effective solution compared with purchasing a brand-new probe.

3. The Repair: Crystal Replacement

Our technical team performed a full crystal replacement on the C251 convex probe. The procedure included:

  • Disassembly of the probe head and controlled removal of the faulty crystal array
  • Installation and alignment of a new, matched crystal/element set
  • Acoustic re-matching and precise re-sealing of the lens and housing
  • Electrical safety, element continuity and full functional testing on the system

4. The Result: Complete Imaging Fully Restored

After the repair, the same C251 transducer produced a complete, even and artifact-free image with no drop-outs. The customer confirmed the scan quality was excellent, effectively restoring the probe to full clinical performance. The images below were captured after the crystal replacement.

5. Why Choose Our Ultrasound Transducer Repair Service

  • Component-level expertise: we repair at the crystal/element level, not just replace whole probes.
  • Cost saving: a repaired transducer can cost a fraction of a new probe, with no compromise in image quality.
  • Fast turnaround: most repairs are completed and returned within a short lead time to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Reliable parts & testing: every repaired probe is fully tested for image integrity, electrical safety and element performance.
  • Wide model coverage: support for Hitachi, GE, Philips, Mindray, Nihon Kohden and other major platforms.

6. Reference Product & Contact

This repair was carried out on a Hitachi C251 convex ultrasound transducer (Model C251, 1.0-5.0 MHz broadband, convex array, ARIETTA 65 compatible).
